Self-Regulation and Its Development in the Classroom
Self-regulation states that the capability to be able to manage and work through one’s inner thoughts, behaviors and emotions appropriately. For instance, in a stressful situation the child can calm themselves down before becoming upset or lose focus on tasks at hand, even with all the distractions all around them and being able to demonstrate self-regulation.
Teachers and educators can model and inspire self-regulation in the classroom by:
- Have a classroom routine and set of rules that the students are expected to abide by.
- Make available opportunities for students to be able to practice self-control, such as being patient when taking turns.
- Teachers using different methods and approaches when helping students with their coping skills, like counting to 10 and taking calming deep breaths.
